Traditionally the bride wears a white dress and the groom wears a suit (top hat and tails). The bride may be attended by bridesmaids and pageboys. The groom and the bride say their vows. After the wedding ceremony guests are invited to attend a meal and further celebrations.

Number of marriages There were 242,842 marriages registered in England and Wales in 2017, a decrease of 2.8% compared with 2016 and 1.1% lower than 2015. The change between 2016 and 2017 was driven by a 9.5% decline in the number of religious marriages coupled with a 0.6% decline in the number of civil marriages.
